Hello,
I have been reading on this site for a while and have posted a few replies, but thought that I should share my story with everyone in case it helps some people.
I am 29 years old, and used to get a migraine every month with my period. It would usually start the same day that my period would start, basically putting me out of commision for as long as it lasted, as you all know. I saw different doctors, had an MRI that showed "white matter," which the doctor said was common in migraine sufferers, had a CT scan (which ended up not being necessary), had multiple blood tests, etc. At the time I was taking Wellbutrin, Prozac, and Xanax for depression/anxiety, and was prescribed Imitrex and then LorTab for the migraine pain because Imitrex wasn't doing enough to releive the pain.
A family member who also gets migraines was getting involved in a study taking a product called Drinkin' Mate, which is marketed for hangovers and is an effervescent guava leaf extract. It's a new product, and the company had suspicions that it would work for headache sufferers too. I didn't have anything to lose and it was an herbal supplement (studies have not shown any side effects from taking it), so I decided to become involved. I took one effervescent tablet every day for about 1 1/2 months, and IT WORKED!! After the 1 1/2 months I decided to try taking it every other day, and I didn't have any migraines for the next 4 months. I put all this in the past tense because I got pregnant in August and haven't been able to take Drinkin' Mate since it's an herbal supplement. I haven't really gotten any headaches since I've been pregnant, which for me is really bizarre - even after my migraines went away I still got tension headaches on a regular basis (and Drinkin' Mate helped those too - I would take one when I felt a "normal" headache coming on). My doctor has told me I probably don't get headaches now due to the change in hormones that accompany pregnancy.
So anyways, I wanted to share this with everyone here, because it's something that helped me and helped other participants too - and it doesn't have side effects. There are people involved in the study that were on disability because of their migraines, and it helped them too. All I can say is give it a try!
I hope this helps some of you, and good luck! Kristina
