Hi ! I am a 49 year old premenopausal female, suffering hormonal migraines for about 6 months now.

I was prescribe Immitrex last month, it helps when I get one to make it go away, but the pain and discomfort is horrific ! I spent Christmas eve day in bed and barely made it through Christmas due to these severe migraines.

Anyway, have considered low dose birth control but hesitate to put more drugs in my body as I am already on Wellbutrin for chronic depression.

I am interested in your personal experiences with natural supplements, such as magnesium and Vitamin B2. Any other advice is most welcome.

Wishing you all a happy new year.

Hello,

I have noticed that I get a horrible hormonal migraine 1-2 days before my period. I have tried both Magnesium and the B's. Unfortunately, they did not work for me. A good friend of mine upped his B intake and it cured his migraines. It can't hurt to try!! Good luck.

I have migraines the first couple days of my period. I've finally decided to try a low dose of birth control pills continuously. Since I'll take active pills all the time, I'll no longer have a period, but hope it will help my migraines.

The doctor told me it may take six months to even out. I hate to think of experimenting -- and maybe making the headaches worse -- for that long. The alternative is probably doing nothing, so I think I'll try. I just need to get the prescription filled...

Here's some good information on hormonal migraines: http://www.headaches.org/educational_mo ... mone2.html

Best of luck!

Kerrie

Hi Margie!

I am so sorry to hear about Christmas eve and day, that's a real bummer - I used to be on Wellbutrin (now on Prozac since I'm pregnant) and was prescribed Imitrex for my migraines, although I was also prescribed LorTabs because the Imitrex didn't always work for me.

I tried a product called Drinkin' Mate - it's a guava leaf extract - because I knew someone who was involved in a study with the product, and it completely cured my migraines. It's marketed for hangovers (and it works for that, too:), but I used to get a migraine every month during my period, and the last one lasted seven days - it was horrible. I took the product every day for about 1 1/2 months. I haven't taken Drinkin' Mate since I've been pregnant, and I haven't gotten a migraine again - I'm not sure if it's because I'm pregnant, but I sure am thankful. I don't even get regular headaches now either, so I'm guessing being pregnant has something to so with it. But I would take a Drinkin' Mate when I got a normal headache it would lessen in severity. Anyways, I hope this helps. I know there were others involved in the study who were on disability due to their migraines, and it helped them too. There were about 10 people in all.

Good luck!
Kristina

Hi,

I just experimented with NuvaRing (hormonal birth control) and it did not work for me. It made me depressed, cranky and my migraines were much worse than usual. I am not saying it won't work for you but I couldn't/wouldn't be able to do it for 6 months to see if it would make things better.

In retrospect, if I had realized that the NuvaRing would throw my body into a hormonal pregnancy state, I would never have done it. My first 4 months of pregnancy were horrific.

I did get my 17 B estrodial tested and it's low, low, low throughout the month with no rise at ovulation (I'm 40). Anyone want to comment?

:) Dusty

I've been dealing with hormonal headaches for about 5 years now. I'm 43. I was on the pill for 4 weeks and I have to come off it. I had 4 migraines during that time. I was not willing to suck it up for another few months in the hope that by removing the period I would be removing the migraine.
I've also tried an estrogen patch. I was on that two weeks, two weeks off for two months. I had terrible migraines. I was so depressed that did not work.
So I'm back to the triptans which don't really work but I feel better just know I have them.
Imitrex always left me feeling a little nauseus. Frova doesn't do that. Frova will work on my "minor migraines" where the pain is more like a 2 on a 5 point scale. It does not work for me when I hit 5. Nothing does. I even have injectable DHE which you have to take compazine too for the nausea, and that doesn't abort the pain (it will diminish it a bit but you have to make sure you are covered for the accompanying nausea that will hit you like a truck.)
Next month I'm going to the Dr to have my estrogen level measured. I'm thinking at this point that maybe going on Premarin is the answer because I think my problem is a progesterone defieciency more than it is an estrogen problem.
