Diet, Symptoms, Triggers

A Cold? Nope, Migraine.

You know that cold that gave me brain fog and fatigue as bad as with my worst migraine attacks? It was migraine. While the mild cold lasted only a few days, I simultaneously developed a reaction to one of my “safe” foods (likely cauliflower). It was triggering migraines that were lower on the pain scale than usual since I’d restarted Ritalin as a preventive. Since I ate cauliflower daily, sometimes multiple times a day, I was in a pretty much perpetual migraine.

I’m getting it sorted out, but am also pushing to introduce new foods to my diet so this doesn’t happen again (it has also happened with coconut and butternut squash). That means more migraines as I find out what’s OK and what’s not and what rotation schedule my foods need to be on. It’s annoying and frustrating, but I’ve got a good plan in place and trust that if I’ve figured this out before, I can do it again.

I’ll probably be quieter than usual for a bit, since my mind isn’t cooperating with this writing thing right now. I am reading a ton, including lots of health-related non-fiction that I’m eager to tell you about. Take care of yourselves. I’ll be back soon.

  1. I have always been able to eat sweet potato until a year ago where I ate some and was “sick” almost straight away. The next two times I ate it, 6 months ago, it happened again. I had no idea why i could not eat my favourite vege until i read this post (i only found your blog about 10 minutes ago) seems to me it is a trigger food for me.

    1. Lillian, I’m sorry you’ve developed a reaction to your favorite vegetable! Most people can reintroduce foods after a break from them, though the length of the break depends on the person. I’ve had some success with yams when sweet potatoes have been a problem. Best wishes.

  2. I developed daily post-traumatic migraines after a car accident. They went away when I started getting trigger point injections. Have you tried that?

  3. Hi Kerrie,
We, your subscribers can wait. Getting your health together should be your priority right now. Sitting for long hours in front of a computer is also a very typical reason for headaches, so avoid that too.

    Get well soon !

  4. I’m so sorry to read this Kerrie…I recently traveled for a wedding/family vaca & have been terribly sick w/ migraine daily. I know once I get back into my normal routine it should settle but weathering the storm is no fun. I hope you find some peace/calm to your pain soon, I’ll miss your posts–but take care of yourself first & foremost always!!

  5. Hang in there!! I struggle with migraines also. The only thing I have found that works for me is Maxalt. Takes it away instantly! Except you have to wait for the migraine to be full blown for it to be treatable. But having a migraine last for only 10 minutes then a few days is better than nothing I guess. Give Maxalt a try!

  6. Kerrie, hang in there! I’m so impressed that you have come so far in figuring out where a lot of your migraines have been coming from. Sadly, when the GP who’d been treating my migraine disease changed practices and “dumped” me, my neuro took me off methylphenidate. I had really liked it. I hope you feel better soon!
